What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is designed to treat and repair or replace diseased, defective or damaged teeth. Treatments include dental implants, crowns, bridges, fillings, root canals and more.

Restorative dentistry focuses on the repair or replacement of teeth that are decayed, damaged or defective. While some of these procedures are cosmetic, many are considered medically necessary for oral health. Restoration typically refers to the placement of dental prosthetics. However, it can also involve treating and preventing dental disease. This is often essential for ensuring that the restored teeth remain in good condition.

Restorative Dentistry BenefitsRestorative Dentistry | Kalil Dental Associates | Methuen MA

Patients who undergo dental restoration at Dr. Donna Kalil and Dr. Kenneth Kalil’s office benefit by having:

  • Less tooth discomfort, pain or sensitivity
  • Proper function during biting and chewing
  • Better long-term oral health
  • A more attractive and vibrant smile

When dental problems are left untreated, they tend to get worse over time. Therefore a condition that started out affecting just one tooth can end up causing problems throughout your mouth. This is why it is so important to seek restorative treatment as soon as possible. As a result, you could end up saving your healthy teeth from permanent damage!

Am I a Candidate for Restorative Dentistry?

Dental restoration is intended for patients with any of the following tooth flaws:

  • One or more missing teeth
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Stained teeth that do not respond to whitening
  • Teeth that have a root canal infection
  • Decayed teeth
  • Misshapen or too widely spaced teeth
  • Enamel that is excessively worn

Patients of any age can undergo dental restoration that is appropriate for their specific dental problems. If a procedure involves oral surgery, you should be in generally good health with no serious medical issues.

Dental restoration covers a very broad range of treatments. Here are some of the procedures performed at our office.

Tooth Colored (Resin) Fillings

Tooth-colored (resin) fillings restore teeth back to function utilizing conservative preparation design.

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

These restorations strengthen and repair molars. Inlays are placed on the chewing surface of the tooth. While onlays replace the chewing surface and one or more cusps (the bumps around the outer perimeter of the molar). They may also extend down the side of the tooth.

Dental Crowns

Crowns repair teeth that do not have enough healthy structure left to be restored with a filling, inlay or onlay. They can also anchor traditional bridges, to restore teeth that have undergone a root canal and to cap dental implants.

Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers cover up minor flaws such as chips, cracks and permanent discoloration. They can also be used to restore teeth that are misshapen, short, crooked or too widely spaced.

Dental Composite Bonding

This resin material can be adjusted to match the patient’s existing tooth color. Then it is used to restore the original dimensions of a chipped tooth.

Dental Implants

Titanium implants are placed in the jaw bone where they fuse with the bone during healing. Next, they are capped with a porcelain crown to replace a lost tooth. Implants can also be used to support bridges or dentures.

These dental prosthetics can replace a lost tooth. Crowns on either side of the missing tooth hold a traditional bridge in place.

Dentures are created for patients with extensive tooth loss. They may be full or partial and removable or fixed depending on the extent of a patient’s tooth and bone loss.
