This condition is linked to everything from tooth loss to cardiovascular disease to low birth weight infants for mothers with infected gums. So what do we do? We brush morning and night and, at least some of the time, we floss our teeth like our dentist recommends. But is this enough?

For some people, a good oral health routine may be just what they need to sustain healthy gums. Adding in a few other healthy habits couldn’t hurt though.

  • Veg out! Loading up on vegetables is a proven way to whittle the waistline, but can this habit also be good for your mouth? It seems so! Vegetables deliver nutrients and minerals that our teeth need, and the mouth also benefits from the water content they contain.
  • Eat chicken! If you have heard of the Chick-fil-A chain, you have heard this slogan. But really, eating chicken could be good for your teeth because it contains the calcium and phosphorous teeth need.
  • Chew gum. Chewing gum that is sweetened with xylitol is a good habit because it encourages saliva flow. The more saliva that washes through the mouth, the more diluted acidity and sugar residue becomes. The less acid and sugar that sit on the gums, the less damage can be done.
  • Get braces. When your teeth are turned, overlapping, or even spaced too far apart, there are plenty of welcoming places for oral bacteria to settle in for the long haul.
